Fiji, Four Ways: Island Luxury for Every Kind of Traveller

The over water bures at the Likuliku Lagoon Resort in Fiji.

Fiji has long been a favourite for travellers seeking barefoot luxury, and it's easy to see why. Thanks to an invitation from Tourism Fiji, we had the opportunity to fly with Fiji Airways and experience four exceptional island resorts firsthand—each offering its own distinct take on Fijian hospitality. From private island escapes to wellness retreats and overwater bures, here's what makes each of these properties worth considering for your next island getaway.

Fiji Gateway Hotel

Our journey began with an overnight stay at the Fiji Gateway Hotel, conveniently located opposite Nadi Airport. Staying in one of the hotel's newly completed rooms and dining at the refurbished Palm Court Restaurant made it clear just how far this property has come. Following its recent expansion, it's now a stylish and comfortable base for a pre- or post-island stay before heading out to one of Fiji's luxury island resorts.

Wakaya Island Resort & Spa

A 40-minute flight from Nadi brings you to the spectacular Wakaya Island—pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and a level of privacy that's hard to match anywhere else in the world. Highlights of a stay here include time at the Breeze Spa, exploring the lush island landscape, and visiting the local primary school for a genuine glimpse into the island community. For travellers wanting to truly disconnect, Wakaya is close to unbeatable.

Tokoriki Island Resort

Tokoriki Island Resort consistently ranks among Fiji's top adults-only destinations, and it's easy to understand why. Warm Fijian hospitality, excellent dining and elegantly decorated bures come together for a truly memorable stay, with a sunset hike overlooking the Mamanuca Islands a particular highlight. Among more than twenty Fiji properties visited over the years, Tokoriki remains an outstanding choice in every aspect.

Six Senses Fiji

On Malolo Island, Six Senses Fiji brings a strong focus on wellness and sustainability to the luxury resort experience. A soothing sound-healing session, organic gardens and hands-on conservation projects all reflect the resort's ethos, while the elegantly designed villas suit couples, families and multigenerational groups alike. Fiji's renowned surf breaks are just a short boat ride away, making it a versatile choice for a range of travellers.

Likuliku Lagoon Resort

The final stop on this journey, Likuliku Lagoon Resort is an adults-only retreat and home to Fiji's only authentic overwater bures. Recently renovated, the resort now offers refreshed accommodation, an updated pool and the Saluwaki Restaurant, all wrapped in a romantic atmosphere that makes it an ideal choice for couples.

Final Thoughts

Though it was a whirlwind itinerary, each resort delivered a distinct luxury experience—from Wakaya's exclusivity and Tokoriki's relaxed elegance to Six Senses' wellness focus and Likuliku's iconic overwater bures. Fiji truly has something for every kind of traveller, and every visit deepens our appreciation for the warmth of Fijian hospitality.
